West Vancouver, October 30, 2008 – The Rotary Club of West Vancouver Sunrise will have a ShelterBox on display at Park Royal South on Saturday and Sunday, November 8 and 9 near the Food Fair. The ShelterBox Project is about helping people in their worst times to provide them comfort and a place to call home for the period of time that it takes them to rebuild their lives after a natural disaster. Since its inception ShelterBoxes have been distributed to every continent except Antarctica and Australia. Its founder Tom Henderson was recently profiled as one of CNN’s Heroes.
Donations of any amount are welcome. With every $1200 raised, we can purchase one Shelter Box; the price includes transportation to any location in the world. With the first $1200 raised, Park Royal will match the donation to purchase a second Shelter Box! Please imagine for a moment how you would feel if we had an earthquake here and you lost your home and your income and had no where to go.
About ShelterBox
ShelterBox is a disaster relief charity whose mission is to provide humanitarian aid worldwide in the form of shelter, warmth and comfort for people displaced by natural and other disasters.
This aid is provided in the form of ‘ShelterBoxes’, which are tailored to each situation, but generally contain a 10-person tent, blankets, tools, water purification and cooking equipment. Every box is individually numbered and can be tracked by donors.
ShelterBox has helped millions of people worldwide and responded to 72 disasters including the Indian Ocean tsunami, Hurricane Katrina and the Pakistan and Kashmir earthquake as well as the recent catastrophes in Burma and China. ShelterBox also has an ongoing programme in Africa called A Million in Africa, which aims to help one million people who have been displaced or left homeless by events such as the HIV/AIDs crisis and civil conflict.
The Shelterbox Canada Project was founded within the Rotary Club of Ladysmith, British Columbia, and is promoted and administered by Rotarians from across Canada. For more information, visit www.shelterbox.ca or www.ShelterBox.org.
