Approved Intersection on Marine Drive set to operate as of November 12
WEST VANCOUVER, B.C. – The approved intersection on Marine Drive at Park Royal, which has been under construction since June 2012, will open and be fully operational on Monday, November 12.
“We are keen to get the intersection operational and restore more normalized driving conditions for Park Royal customers and the broader community,” said Rick Amantea, Vice President of Park Royal. “We are
grateful for the patience and understanding of drivers over the last five months and want to thank our contractors, along with the District of West Vancouver, TransLink, BC Ministry of Transportation and
Infrastructure, and The Squamish Nation, for their efforts in bringing this project to completion.”
After the community gets accustomed to the lights flashing for five days, beginning Wednesday, November 7, the intersection will be fully operational with signalized traffic lights on Monday, November
12. These lights will provide enhanced movement for pedestrians, cyclists, public transportation, first responders and vehicles. The current existing west vehicle overpass, situated to the north of the North
Shore Credit Union, will be removed in the weeks following the opening of the intersection.
The work to remove the overpass will take place between the dates of November 13 – 30, between the hours of 11 PM and 6 AM. Appropriate traffic diversions and traffic management will be in place as
needed and the work will occur overnight (Sunday to Thursday nights only). Due to the nature of the work, an elevated level of noise is expected; however, steps will be taken to advance the work schedule as
quickly as possible.
The pedestrian bridge, which connects pedestrians from the north side of Marine Drive to The Village at Park Royal, will be removed on Tuesday, November 20 between 11 PM and 6 AM. The scope of work
involved will require a full closure of Marine Drive with traffic being diverted through Park Royal North and The Village at Park Royal.
In addition to the approved intersection at Marine Drive, Park Royal has also constructed a second intersection within the shopping centre at the entrance to The Village Main Street between Home Depot and Extra Foods. This intersection will provide greater safety for pedestrians, cyclists and drivers and will be an important means for governing traffic movements when the expanded Park Royal South parking structure re-opens in Spring 2013.
“These two intersections, along with improved pedestrian sidewalks, bus priority lanes, new bus shelters and cycling lanes, will enable the community to move around Park Royal and the vicinity in a more
efficient and safe manner,” added Amantea. “We see these changes as necessary steps in our evolution to become a complete neighbourhood within the community.”
Park Royal’s long-term plans include upgrading and investing nearly $600,000 in new landscaping improvements on the Marine Drive median, along with a new architectural fence and new lighting.
Parking lot improvements on Park Royal North will be completed within the next few weeks and Phase One of the Park Royal Village Retail Expansion is slated to open in Fall 2013, with the expanded parking
structure open for use in Spring 2013.
